Taiwan Makers See Large-size LCD Panel Shipments Edge Up In 2Q18

Aug 07, 2018

Taiwan-based panel makers, excluding Foxconn-controlled Sharp, shipped a total of 62.03 million units of 9-inch and above large-sized LCD panels in the second quarter of 2018, up 5.5% sequentially and 5.9% on year, according to Digitimes Research figures.

Although China-based makers have continued ramping up their production capacities from their 8.5G, 8.6G and 10.5G lines, Taiwan's flat panel suppliers still maintained a 34.2% share in the global large-sized panel market in the second quarter thanks to the optimization of their product mix as well as the promotion of 39-inch TV panels, Digitimes Research has found.

Looking into the second half of 2018, Taiwan's shipments of large-sized panels are expected to grow 5.4% sequentially in the third quarter as prices of various sizes of panels have dropped significantly as compared to a year earlier, which will help drive up sales in the end market. However, total panel shipments are likely to dip 1.2% on quarter in the fourth quarter due to seasonality.

For Individual companies, AU Optronics (AUO) is expected to see its shipments remain flat sequentially in the second half of the year as the company will focus more on 55- and 56-inch products despite increased panel output from its expanded 8.5G line.

Innolux is expected to see its shipments expand significantly in the second half as it is ramping up shipments of below 50-inch sizes of panels. Overall, shipments of Taiwan's TV panels will account for 26% of the global TV panel shipments in the latter half of 2018.

Shipments of panels for monitor devices and AIO PC systems will continue on a growth track in the third quarter due to seasonality and plans by Taiwan's makers to shift their 6G lines to production of smaller sizes of panels for TV and monitor applications.

Notebook panels will continue to be a major focus of Taiwan's panel makers as prices of these panels have been relatively stable with smaller fluctuations, and notebook panel shipments by Taiwan's suppliers will account for 47% of the global shipments in the second half of the year.

China-based BOE Technology is expected to continue to enhance its presence in the tablet panel market with a prospect to see its shipment of above 9-inch tablet panel shipments to increase 6.9% in the second half of the year as compared to those shipped in the first half, Digitimes Research estimates.
